Haig and his maps

Speaker: John Peaty
Map

Contrary to popular belief, Haig realised the crucial importance of terrain on the Western Front. Special relief model-like maps were made to aid operational planning. These maps, their use by Haig and the British Expeditionary Force, their survival, their transfer from the Imperial War Museum in Duxford to the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, and their conservation are too little known.

John Peaty is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Royal Historical Society. He holds a PhD and MA in War Studies from King’s College London, where he also attended the intelligence studies programme. He served on the Committee of the British Commission for Military History for many years in the post of International Secretary. He has guided both military and civilian groups around battlefields across the globe.
