Trowels and Trenches - Archaeology in the Great War

Speaker: Clive Harris
Preserved Trench

Archaeology of the Great War, often explored through "Trowels and Trenches" initiatives, examines WWI, 1914–1918, by excavating battlefield landscapes, trenches, and tunnels to uncover both military artifacts and ancient, previously unknown ruins. This discipline reveals the daily life, training methods, and material culture of soldiers on the Western Front and, crucially, in locations like Gallipoli, where troops frequently encountered ancient archaeology.
