Le Cateau - A Reappraisal

General Horace Smith-Dorrien’s decision to “Stand and Fight” around the French town of Le Cateau against a greatly superior German force committed the British II Corps to a close-range artillery battle, with devastating effects on infantry advancing over open ground. However, this heroic stand did relieve the pressure on the remainder of the B.E.F, buying them vital time to continue to withdraw towards Paris.
