Quintinshill, 22nd May 1915; Britain's worst railway disaster

Speaker: Grant Cullen
Quintinshill Rail Disaster Secours Voiture De Queue

The Quintinshill disaster on May 22, 1915, near Gretna Green, Scotland, was Britain's worst rail accident, killing over 200 people (mostly Royal Scots soldiers) in a collision caused by signalmen's negligence.

In the accident a train full of troops - who were heading for Liverpool en-route to Gallipoli - hit a stationary local train, followed by a Glasgow express hitting the wreckage. The disaster was exacerbated by burning wooden carriages, highlighting issues like fatigue and lax rule-following
