The Indian Army at Hampton Court Palace

Speaker: Dr Tejpal Singh Ralmill
Indians At Palace

During the early 20th century, Indian Army soldiers camped at Hampton Court Palace for major royal events—Edward VII’s coronation (1902), George V’s (1911), George VI’s (1937), and the 1919 peace parades.

For many, it was their first visit to England. In 1919, nearly 1,800 officers, soldiers, and workers stayed in a specially built camp—one of Britain’s largest gatherings of people from India and South Asia.
