The Songs of the First World War
Speaker: Dr Andrew Smith
Dr Andrew Smith will look at the background and creation of some of the popular songs from the trenches of the First World War, written to boost morale, encourage enlistment, take the publics mind of the war. Especially those songs sung by the soldiers in the trenches as their way of making their feeling known to their officers!
These songs reflect the themes of the war and were widely distributed through sheet music, gramophone records and live performances. It's an interactive workshop on soldiers from the trenches .... so plenty of participation is needed. Come along to an educational but very entertaining evening.
New visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts.
