Special Railway Loads in WW1
Bill is based in Bedfordshire and does genealogy research for friends and family, During the first Covid lockdown he began to get interested in model narrow gauge railways and started with an American layout in a briefcase. In lockdown-2 came a Japanese track in a suitcase and the start of researching and collecting models of the WW1 trench railways. That got Bill to join the WFA, as an on-line member, so he could see a talk given about WW1 trains. He has since been on several battlefield tours, seeking out railway aspects at some of the locations.
While standard supplies like food and ammunition were typical railway loads on the Western Front, many unusual loads were also transported, often with great difficulty, and ingenuity, to the frontline. Bill’s subsequent research has evolved into his presentation ‘Special Railway Loads in WW1’, which will cover some of the more unusual items that the railways carried to the Western Front, enhanced with some of Bill’s models. Not one to miss!
