Behind the Barbed Wire Fence – Canada’s Internment Programme
Historian Viv Newman has published several books through ‘Pen and Sword’ on women’s and children’s experiences in World War One, but in this compelling talk she is uncovering a long-hidden and somewhat sinister secret.
In October 1914, some 5,500 men, women and children were rounded up and interned in 24 POW camps across Canada. Their crime? To have (legally) emigrated to Canada in the 1900s from Ukraine.
Despite the British Government's intervention, the Dominion of Canada refused to release these innocent, harmless individuals. Post-war Canada went into denial and claimed it never happened.
This talk explores this dark period in Canada's history and how a light is slowly being shone on what really happened. Not one to miss!
