For our 27 September 2025 meeting we are welcoming Kevin Heath of the Lost in Waters Deep group. The group research, find and dive on shipwrecks around the cost of Scotland and, while Kevin will give an overview of their work, his focus will be on their finding of HMS Hawke in August 2024.
HMS Hawke was an armoured cruise of 7,770 tons and she was launched in 1891. On 15 October 1914 she was on patrol in the North Sea about 70 miles east of Fraserburgh when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-9 and sank within a few minutes. Of the crew of almost 600 officers and men only 70 survived the sinking.
HMS Hawke remained undisturbed on the sea bed for almost 110 years at a depth of more than 100 metres, before the Lost in Waters Deep dived on her and confirmed her identity.
