Jutland: The Unfinished Battle.

Speaker: Nick Jellicoe
Iron Duke Whyllie

From his unique family perspective, Nick Jellicoe will talk about Jutland, history’s first, last and largest clash of dreadnoughts. A battle in which 250 ships took part and almost 10,000 sailors were killed or injured. A battle to which both protagonists claimed victory. A battle about which rivers of ink have been spilled over the last hundred and ten years.

His first book, 'Jutland, The Unfinished Battle' was not only a narrative about the first and last clash of dreadnoughts, it also followed the often-vitriolic post-battle debate on who won and who was at fault in a battle fought in the shadow of history where the public had been primed to expect another Trafalgar but where new untried technologies often brought about unseen consequences.

Nick will briefly highlight the phases of the battle, identify some of the key points of controversy, follow the debate as it evolved and comment on the place in historical memory in which Jutland now sits.

Nick Jellicoe is well placed to tell the story of Jutland. His grandfather, Sir John Jellicoe commanded the Grand Fleet for the first two years of the Great War. After a career in business, Nick is now focused on his passion for historical research and writing.

Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts.
