Churchill, Scotland and the Great War.
Andrew Liddle will explore Winston Churchill's much neglected relationship with Scotland during the era of the Great War.
Churchill was a Member of Parliament for Dundee between 1908-1922. The city gave him five election victories and a platform to progress his political career, including holding high office at the Admiralty. For a remarkable four months in 1916, Churchill was the commanding officer of the 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, in the trenches near Ypres. Scotland gave Churchill his wife, Clemmie, a scion of the aristocratic Ogilvy family from Angus. He also found in Dundee an interest in social policy, becoming one of the leading reformers in the Liberal government during the years before 1914.
Andrew Liddle is a writer and political journalist. He is the author of the highly regarded biography, "Churchill - the Scottish Years" (2024)
