The Guns at Le Cateau: 26 August 1914

Speaker: Vern Littley
WW1 Artillery Gun

This is a classic battle fought during the Retreat from Mons in August 1914 between the II Corps of the BEF and IV army Corps of the Imperial German army. Smith-Dorien (GOC II Corps) deciding his men were too exhausted to continue the retreat, held his position for over six hours against the German IV Corps before continuing his retreat. This talk will include a look at the battlefield today, the best stands to view the battle. It will retell the story of this famous action and discuss the lessons learnt.
