The Salonika Zeppelin
This fascinating talk is based on years of research and looks at the nowadays largely forgotten Salonika Zeppelin (LZ55) brought down in the Vardar marshes in May 1916. The Zeppelin was brought down by anti-aircraft fire from HMS Agamemnon a pre-Dreadnought battleship while attempting to bomb Salonika harbour.
The crash site soon became a tourist attraction. The metal structure of the wrecked Zeppelin was dragged by Allied soldiers from the marches to the harbour-front in Thessalonika where it was reconstructed.
Join us to hear a detailed account of this ambitious attack and how it was defeated.
