All Arms Warfare: A West Yorkshire Brigade at Cambrai | Fraser Skirrow

11 October 2026

Over the years, we have filmed quite a lot of speakers at the branch. These have been available to view on the WFA's YouTube channel, and can also be found as 'articles' on the WFA website. However these videos have not been separately grouped for those visiting the Yorkshire branch 'landing page' on the website.

By starting a process of loading these onto the branch page, this makes a number of talks that stretch back to about 2019 'visible'.

In this presentation, Fraser Skirrow talks about A West Yorkshire Brigade at Cambrai - which was given to the branch in October 2022.

On 20th November 1917 the West Yorkshire Battalions of 185th Brigade assaulted the fortified village of Havrincourt as part of the Cambrai offensive. This talk looks at how that attack was conducted on the day.

Using animations based on the orders and war diaries and a set of little known letters and maps from an officer of 2/8th West Yorks the presentation follows individual tanks and infantry companies as they manoeuvre on the battlefield. It also looks at how tank/infantry co operation worked, how the new artillery tactics supported the assault and how new infantry organisation and tactics combined to deliver success trench by trench.
