Disaster to Triumph: The West Riding Division | Derek Clayton

30 September 2026

Over the years, we have filmed quite a lot of speakers at the branch. These have been available to view on the WFA's YouTube channel, and can also be found as 'articles' on the WFA website. However these videos have not been separately grouped for those visiting the Yorkshire branch 'landing page' on the website.

The very first video we attempted - as an experiment - was when Derek Clayton came to talk to us about The West Riding Division in May 2010.

In this presentation, Derek examines the performance of the 49th (West Riding) Division on three specific days, detailing the attacks of 3 September 1916 at Thiepval, 9 October 1917 at Poelcapelle, and 1 November 1918 at Valenciennes.
