Charles Grant

Charles was born in Nairn, 17 miles east of Inverness, Scotland, 9 August 1869. At the outbreak of the war, he was than living in Ingleton, near Kirby Lonsdale, Yorkshire. Charles was the husband of Catherine Grant (née Campbell).

He joined the Royal Navy in March 1885 on the HMS Impregnable and over the next 12 years served on various vessels including HMS Waterwitch, a survey ship.

In 1901 Charles was the First Petty Officer on the HMS Vindictive, he left the navy in August 1909.

Charles died aged 46 when his ship, the SS Membland hit a mine in the North Sea. The Membland was lost with 'all hands', and the crew of twenty are commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
