Dennis Albert Holgate died of wounds on this day in 1917.
Dennis Albert Holgate was born in Draughton, Yorkshire in 1898. He was the son of Joseph Holgate (a limestone quarryman) from Yorkshire, and Elizabeth née Beck from Ulverston in Cumberland.
At the 1901 Census, three-year-old Dennis was living with his parents in Draughton, North Yorkshire with his 9 month old brother Frederick and two boarders who both worked in the quarry alongside Joseph. At the 1911 Census, Dennis, now 13, was at school. As well as ten year old Frederick, he had younger siblings Joseph and Ivy. They all lived on Manor Row, Draughton in a four-roomed dwelling - with a boarder, also named Holgate, who had been living with them in 1901.
Dennis was conscripted into service at Otley in 1916.
His family moved to live at 17 Main Road in nearby Addingham.
In December 1916, before Dennis was posted abroad, his mother died - her sister Agnes, who (had) lived in Skipton, also died on the same day.
After arriving in France in early 1917, Dennis saw action at Bullecourt and Lagnicourt during the Battle of Arras.
In May 1917, the Battery was in action at Écoust-Saint-Mein, firing day and night, when Dennis received gun-shot wounds.
He was sent down the line to the 49th CCS at Achiet-le-Grand 10 miles away, but died of his wounds on 17 May.
He is buried in Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension.
