The Home Army in 1913
In this presentation, Dr Bill Mitchinson looks at the anticipated role of Britain's territorial Army prior to the outbreak of WW1.
Prior to World War I, the Territorial Force, established in 1908, was intended primarily for home defence and was not initially expected to serve overseas. Its role was to supplement the regular army in case of invasion or other threats to the British Isles. The British Army itself was relatively small compared to continental powers and was largely focused on policing the Empire and maintaining garrisons abroad.
