Revisiting the Ludendorff Offensives, March-July 1918

Published on 28 November 2025
Submitted by Prof David Stevenson

This talk by Professor Stevenson re-examines the five offensives launched by the German army on the Western Front in spring-summer 1918. The presentation considers the planning process on both the German and the Allied sides, and the plans' implementation, highlighting the reasons for the offensives' failure.

Prof Stevenson argues that that failure was a crucial reason for the First World War ending at the time and in the circumstances that it did.
