Malta-Nurse of the Mediterranean
Malta is known for its defence against the Ottomans in the 1565 and against the Germans and Italians during WWII. However, over 125,000 casualties from the 1915 Gallipoli and 1916 Salonika campaigns were cared for on the island during WWI. The talk will explain how the wounded were evacuated by ships across the Mediterranean and how the facilities developed from very little into large surgical and convalescent hospitals. It is the story of how Malta became known as the Nurse of the Mediterranean.
