The Great War on the Silent Screen
After the war films became a popular source of entertainment. Cinema audiences greatly increased. The Great War became a popular choice for filmmakers. Historian Andy Moody will explore the films made by the major studios and their efforts to faithfully and sympathetically recreate those years and the experiences of those who were there. Films such as The Big Parade and the first Oscar winner, Wings made in 1927. In his talk Andy will be exploring popular cinema depictions of the Great War(1930), films made between the wars and in the post war period. There will be discussion about the range of early films made during the interwar period, including: Ypres (1925), Mons (1926), Big Parade (1925) and Journey’s End (1930)
