'Absence from Commemoration in Barnsley 1914-1939'

Speaker: Linda Huttton
3. Light Lines At 6.30Am 2016 (Linda Hutton)

Hundreds of Barnsley-born people who lost their Lives in the First World War were omitted from War Memorials in the Barnsley Borough 1915-1939.
Linda’s  thesis was inspired by a Centenary project to create a First World War Roll of Honour for the Barnsley Borough. They discovered that over 700 Barnsley connected men, whom it was thought should have been on the war memorials had been omitted from commemoration. Many names have been added to Barnsley war memorials during various FWW anniversaries, but why were these men omitted in the first place? Using prosopography, Linda researched 587 Barnsley-born fatalities, and will present her findings briefly with a few interesting stories that she uncovered along the way.
