Creating a 'Continental-sized Army': The British Army's Expansion during the Great War

Speaker: Dudley Giles
British Soldier Inside Trench WW1

In 2011 Dudley discovered, quite by accident, a highly decorated Great War Roll of Honour in Hastings which contained over 100 hand-drawn images of various British and Empire formations. The story of that discovery and the images which appear above the Roll of Honour has formed the basis of a new book which is to be published by Amberley Press in 2027. In that book and in this talk, Dudley chronicals the expansion of the British Army from an organization which, at the turn of the 20th century, had been designed purely as a vehicle to police the Empire into one which, by the end of the Great War, could rightly be said to rival that of the existing continental armies of France, Germany and Russia.
