Lord Kitchener’s military career prior to the First World War was lengthy and varied. Commissioned in 1871, Kitchener’s career included time in Palestine, Egypt, Sudan, South Africa and India. This talk looks at the experience he gained, the individuals he engaged with and how he forged his reputation. The talk ends with a brief epilogue as to how this pre-war experience influenced Kitchener, as Secretary of State for War, during the First World War up to his death in 1916.
