The Quintinshill Disaster
Speaker: Grant Cullen
The Quintinshill disaster of May 1915 was a multi-train rail crash which occurred outside the Quintinshill signal box near Gretna Green in Scotland. The precise death toll was never established as some bodies were never recovered, having been wholly consumed by the fire. The official number of fatalities included 215 Scottish soldiers en-route to Gallipoli, nine other passengers and three railway employees, A further four victims were thought to be children whose remains were never claimed or identified.
It remains the worst rail disaster in British history.
