The Franco-Prussian War and its consequences

Speaker: Alan Robinson
May 2026.2

Fought between 1870 and 1871, this conflict had a lasting impact on European history. By hastening German unification, it significantly altered the balance of power on the continent, with the new German state supplanting France as the dominant European land power. This in turn led to both a rapprochement between France and Russia and growing antagonism between Great Britain and Germany, significant factors in the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914.
