Room 40 Codes and Ciphers
Who would have thought that the bunch of crossword-solving academics (mainly linguists and classicists) together with a few men with military experience and some academic women 'clerks' in a couple of rooms at the Admiralty in 1914 would have such a huge impact on the course of the
Great War? This talk will introduce you to some of the characters involved, describe how they worked in Admiralty Room 40, their relationship with the Navy and their impact on the war, including how they brought the United States into the conflict.
