Hawthorn Ridge - Then and Now

Speaker: Rick Smith
HRC 1600X378 1

As a founder member of the Hawthorn Ridge Crater Association, an association set up to rescue, protect and preserve this iconic site, we as a group, have done an amount of research surrounding this iconic site. This talk will give a history of the area from its early occupation, the plan and execution of the blowing of the mine on 1st July 1916 and its filming by Geoffrey Malins. We look at some of the participants involved on that famous (and infamous) day. The subsequent second blow in November and the successful capture of Beaumont Hamel. Studies that the HRCA have made since its inception add to the story.
