Nick Jellicoe visits Edinburgh to deliver a 110th anniversary talk about Jutland.
Nick Jellicoe spoke for the first time on mainland Scotland, when during Sunday 17 May 2026 he visited our South of Scotland Branch in Edinburgh to talk about the Battle of Jutland a few days before the 110th anniversary.
As well as being the author of well-regarded naval histories, Nick is also the grandson of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe - the commander of the Royal Navy's Grand Fleet during the first two years of the Great War.
In a packed venue at the Scots Guards Club, Nick reflected on several aspects of the great clash of the dreadnoughts, including how the battle unfolded, the many controversies of the action, and the 'rivers of ink' which flowed after the war from Jellicoe and Beatty supporters.
Poignantly, Nick ended his presentation on the subject of commemoration, and the part played by ceremony and symbolism, plus story telling, in how we remember the battle and create reconciliation and friendships between one-time adversaries.
