Gardening in the Great War
Dr John Scanlon takes a look at gardening during the Great War. In the trenches the troops grew a variety of food to supplement there boring diet. Further back behind the lines around casualty clearing stations and hospitals both vegetables and flowers were grown for the patients to look at at. In 1917 at Havre the BEF held a vegetable show.
On the home front , gardening was encouraged especially after the German unrestricted U Boat campaign in 1917 which eventually led to the introduction of rationing in 1918.
