How Two Wheels to War was Researched and Written

Speaker: Nick Shelley
Motorcycle Despatch Riders

Following his talk of October 2025, Nick tells us the story of how his book, 'Two Wheels to War', came to be. The book includes the full text of 'Adventures of a Despatch Rider (1915)' by WHL Watson, illustrated with contemporary photographs and accounts of Watson's unit, with additional material from Watson and those serving with him.

Many relatives of these men were found, including five sons and daughters, who shared memories of their forebears. After summarising their part in the 1914 campaign, Nick explores how 'Adventures' was written and published, including the censor's intervention and parallel accounts by other despatch riders. He details the procedures and sources which he and his brother, Martin, exploited to create the book.

Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome.
