Taking The Fallen Heroes Home

Laying fallen British and Commonwealth service personnel to rest ‘where they fell’ was a principle initially established to deal with the unprecedented number of casualties of the Great War, buried in ‘foreign fields’.  However, there were a number of repatriations during, and just after, that conflict, which seemed to breach that principle.

This talk tells the stories of some of those repatriations.  There were some done with a certain amount of ceremony (The Unknown Warrior, for example), but many were carried out with little, or no, fanfare.  Nicolas looks at some of the reasons behind these apparent breaches of principle.
