By God, They Can Fight!!
This is the story of Warwickshire's territorial battalions on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
48th Division, which included the four Warwickshire Territorial units in France at the time, was in reserve on the 1st July, ready to support the offensive at Gommecourt and Serre. Two of those battalions were attached to 4th Division and took part in the attack on the 'Heidenkopf', a fortified German redoubt, at Serre.
Whilst an overview of the battle will be given, Paul concentrates on the story of the men, the memorials that honour them, and the search for the missing. He will also tell the stories of three men who went to school in Worcester, two of whom are memorialised on separate windows in Worcester cathedral.
The talk will be supported with display boards, medals and artefacts.
Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts.
