Three Sons for the Kaiser: A German Family's Sacrifice in the First World War

Hazel Strouts is the direct granddaughter of Hermann Gercke, a German naval lieutenant who fell in love with an English woman and was sent on spying missions to Russia. Hermann survived despite having three separate ships sunk beneath him in the Baltic while fighting the Russians. In 1917, he volunteered for dangerous U-boat service, but his vessel was ultimately sunk off Gibraltar in May 1918.
