Can you help schools research their local First World War history?

24 October 2025

Volunteer as a research link for the Malcolm Doolin Award 2025.

The Western Front Association runs an annual competition encouraging schools to complete local history projects about the First World War. The Malcolm Doolin Award for Local History Research recognises outstanding work by students exploring their area's connections to the conflict.

Find out more about the award here.

How you can help

When schools register for the competition, they can request to be paired with a WFA member who acts as a research 'link' (volunteer mentor). These links provide valuable guidance to teachers, helping them navigate local history resources and research methods.

What's involved?

As a link, you would:

  • Support teachers with research advice via phone or Zoom
  • Share your knowledge of local history resources
  • Help identify relevant archives, records and sources
  • Provide guidance on research methods

You won't need to visit schools in person – all support is provided remotely. Whilst local knowledge of the school's area can be helpful, it's not essential. What matters most is enthusiasm for local history research or experience working with young people.

Current opportunities

We're currently seeking WFA links for schools in:

  • Nottingham (Primary)
  • Luton (Secondary)
  • Grimsby (Secondary)

Get involved

If you're interested in becoming a link, please contact Eve Wilson, Education Trustee at education@westernfrontassociation.com. Full advice and guidance will be provided to all volunteers.

This is a rewarding opportunity to share your passion for First World War history whilst supporting the next generation of historians.
