The Western Front Association is pleased to announce the launch of the 2025 PhD Grant Scheme.

The aim of the scheme is to provide research scholars the opportunity to enrich their research so that it makes a new and definitive contribution to the knowledge of the First World War. To support PhD researchers in making these important contributions to our understanding of the conflict, the WFA is offering awards of up to £2,500 through this competitive grant. In particular, it is hoped that this grant will aid researchers in accessing archival material in repositories that they may not have otherwise been able to reach, where could this grant take you?

Applications are sought from doctoral candidates in their second year or later. The grant is not restricted to the Western Front, nor are there any restrictions regarding topic. All projects related to the First World War will be considered. Previous winning topics include war artists in Sinai and Palestine, how troops dealt with boredom in Salonika, Ersatz food production in Germany, and logistics and engineering support in the Canadian Corps. Nothing is off limits!

In return for the financial support, recipients are expected to provide the WFA with publishable material, bringing cutting edge research to members.

The deadline for applications for the 2025 scheme is Monday 1 December 2025.

Full terms & conditions can be found on the application form:

Any questions and completed application forms should be directed to Dr Adam Prime (universities@westernfrontassociation).
