Philip Arthur Blanshard died of wounds on this day in 1915
Philip was born 18 September 1894 in Hull. His father was Henry Bland Blanshard, a Wood Sawyer; his mother, Alice née Hurdman, a hairdresser. The family lived at 4 Finsbury Grove, Fountain Road, Hull. He had three older brothers, George, Ernest and Harry, two younger brothers, Walter and Harold, and a younger sister, Kate.
He was educated at Park Road Board School in Hull.
In the 1911 census, at age 16, Philip is listed as a general labourer with the Sanitary Department of the Hull Corporation. living with his parents, seven siblings ages 5 to 21 and his 81 year old grandmother, still at Finsbury Grove in Hull.
Philip enlisted on 4 September 1914 and left England for the front on 21 January 1915 to join his battalion, 2nd Coldstream Guards.
His time at the front was very brief. Philip was severely wounded in action a few days after his arrival at Cuinchy near La Bassée, and died from shell wounds in the 1st Field Hospital at 3:30 pm 2 February 1915.
Philip is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, Béthune, Pas-de-Calais, France
