Henry George Vergottini Adler was killed in action on this day in 1917
Henry Adler was born on 7 June 1873 Winburg, Orange Free State, South Africa. His parents were Wilhelm Heinrich and Cecelia (née Virgottini) of Gloucester Crescent, London.
He was educated at Army House, Neuenheim College, but resigned after 2 years to study mining and metallurgy at the School of Mines, South Kensington. He was a Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
In 1897 he married Miss Ruby Escombe at St.Mary Abbot's Church, South Kensington, London. They lived at 192 Queens Gate, South Kensington.
In 1915, age 42, he returned to England to enlist. He began as a 2nd Lt, RGA in 1916, and was quickly promoted to Captain and then, on 6 June 1917, to Major, Royal Garrison Artillery, 184th Siege Batt. Harold was killed in action at Ypres on 21 June 1917.
Henry is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery.
