Railway Development in WW1

In this presentation, Rob Thompson looks at British Railway Development on the Western Front in the First World War.

Before the war there was an Anglo-French agreement which stipulated that France would provide for all of the BEF’s railway needs upon request, however it became apparent quite soon that a massive amount of organisation would be needed to ensure that the British Army received the supplies it needed to be effective. Despite warnings, the transport system virtually collapsed in the autumn of 1916. As a result, Sir Eric Geddes was appointed to run the army's railway operations.

Rob looks at the effectiveness of what Geddes did in this well delivered and wide-ranging lecture.
