Walter Tull: Pioneering Black Sportsman and First World War Soldier

Published on 31 May 2020

Over the years Stand To! editor Jon Cooksey was involved in co-writing and producing several documentaries for the BBC in collaboration with BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist and Sports Editor Graham McKechnie. These were made available with permission for members during the period of lockdown.

In the broadcast which we have made available via the link below, ex-Northampton Town player and PFA Chairman Clarke Carlisle tells the story of Walter Tull, the first Afro-Caribbean outfield player in the top division of English football, and the first to be commissioned as an infantry officer in the British Army. Clarke retraces the steps that took Tull from the playing field of Northampton Town to the battlefields of the Western Front.
