The Platoon - An Infantryman at War 1916-19

'The Platoon - An Infantryman at War 1916-19' Joseph Steward was a Clerk in the Chesham Motor Company when he enlisted in January 1916. Initially joining the Civil Service Rifles, he embarked late June 1916 for France and the Front. On arrival, he was posted to the 13th (Kensington) Battalion, London Regiment, as a battlefield casualty replacement. He stayed in the Kensingtons returning home in 1919. It was then that he decided to write his story in the form of a narrative, probably intended for his son.

A few years ago the narrative was made available to Steve Roberts and Andy Robertshaw. They was decided to publish the narrative in its original format. Researching the narrative, identifying individuals, units and events proved to be a time consuming and fascinating project and allowed the story of an infantryman to be told in his own words. It was published as The Platoon: An Infantryman on the Western Front 1916-18.

Steve is an ex serviceman with a keen interest in military history, who holds a Masters Degree in British First World War Studies. He has worked on a number of TV & Media projects, acted as a Battlefield Tour guide, and provided Educational talks at schools and other educational establishments. He has also worked on major Battlefield Archaeology projects on the Western Front and elsewhere around the world.
