Verdun 1917: The French Hit Back
We welcome back Christina to Hornchurch for a different look at the Battle of Verdun. With the failure of the German 1916 Verdun offensive the sector became a secondary front for the Germans and an opportunity for aggressive action for the French. The mutinies of spring 1917 meant a more limited offensive than originally intended but careful planning, the massive use of artillery and air power, highly trained infantry and high morale brought quick results. The 1917 battles ended German hopes of success at Verdun and, with American observers already present, paved the way for the Franco-American Meuse-Argonne offensive of September 1918.
This meeting is at The Poppy Lounge of the Royal British Legion, 205 High Street, Hornchurch, RM11 3XT, starting at 8pm. We have access to the RBL bar during our meetings.
Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts
