Jutland Can Be Seen from Walthamstow!?- Chris Hunt

Chris Hunt

In this talk Chris Hunt takes a look at the events of the great naval battle of the First World War when the battle fleets of Britain and Germany clashed in the North Sea in 1916, with a particular focus on the experience of the men of Walthamstow. This new town in south-west Essex (now north-east London) had no naval tradition, and yet it provided more than two hundred and twenty crewmen for the fleet on the day, serving in over half of the hundred and fifty British ships that took part in the battle.

Chris, a retired lecturer in science and technology, has spent the last decade immersing himself in the history of Walthamstow residents' service in the First World War, writing several related articles, giving talks and leading cemetery walks based on his research.

Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts.
