The Fire Brigade Goes to War 1914-1918

Speaker: Nigel Crompton
Engine With Firemen In Army Uniforms

This month we welcome back Nigel Crompton, who last graced our branch in October 2019!

Nigel's presentation begins with the fire service prior to the Great War, and the effect of the mobilisation that commenced with its outbreak, before going on to look at fires and the fire services in the military. With the resulting depletion of manpower, he discusses the role of women firefighters, particularly in factories, and the new risks fire fighters were faced with as munitions production grew dramatically throughout the war. These new threats inevitably led to death and serious injury and mention is made of a few of the fatal incidents. Additionally, he talks about both the air raids which were a new feature of warfare, and the naval bombardments of coastal towns, and the damage and loss of life they caused.

The presentation is supported by numerous photographs and statistics, and Nigel promises a few surprises!!

Nigel has been speaking on local history and related subjects for almost thirty-five years. His interest in the Great War stems from the service of his grandfather and other family members together with ongoing involvement with the Fire Service, and has led him to write various articles, and give presentations on a wide variety of topics, often some way off the beaten track of WWI.

Members and non-members of The Western Front Association are equally welcome. Any new visitors are guaranteed a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from a group of like-minded enthusiasts.
