Welsh Warrior at Ypres 1914: Captain Hubert Rees
Peter Hart delves into the harrowing experiences of Captain Hubert Conway Rees during the early stages of World War I, particularly focusing on the First Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Gheluvelt. Drawing from Rees's personal accounts, the talk offers a vivid portrayal of the brutal realities faced by soldiers on the Western Front.
Captain Rees, serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Welsh Regiment, found himself amidst the fierce fighting at Gheluvelt in late October 1914. During this engagement, his battalion suffered catastrophic losses, with approximately 95% of its 1,200 men killed or wounded. Rees's leadership and resilience were instrumental in rallying the remnants of his unit under relentless enemy fire. His first hand narratives provide a compelling insight into the chaos and courage displayed during one of the war's most intense battles.
Beyond the battlefield, the book also explores Rees's subsequent military career, highlighting his rise through the ranks and the challenges he faced. Notably, in 1918, Rees was captured during the German Spring Offensive and had an unexpected encounter with Kaiser Wilhelm II, an event that left a profound impact on him.
Hart's meticulous research and engaging narrative shed light on the personal experiences of a Welsh officer, offering readers a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of World War I.
