Giant: Lloyd George’s Welsh General the Life & Careers of Major General Sir Ivor Philipps DSO KCB MP
Sir Ivor Philipps was a Major General placed in command of the 38th (Welsh) Division early in 1915, a key part of David Lloyd George's plan for a Welsh "army".
Political Career: He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Southampton from 1906 to 1922.
Ministry of Munitions: Before seeing active service, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary (Military) to the Ministry of Munitions under Lloyd George in June 1915 and briefly served as Acting Director General of Munitions Supply.
Background: Born in 1861, he was a British officer in the British Indian Army, seeing action in various campaigns including the Boxer Rebellion.
Post-War: He was a prominent figure in Pembrokeshire, known for purchasing and restoring Pembroke Castle.
The presentation will cover his diverse career from his early service in India through his time as a Liberal MP, his involvement in the First World War (including the Battle of the Somme), and his later life.
