'Mons, 22nd - 24th August 1914, Re-visited'
The first few days of August 1914 have been used by many historians as a metric by which to form opinions of French, Haig, Allenby, and Smith-Dorrien, which they have continued to apply to them for the remainder of the war. In most cases the perceived success or failures have for the most part been attributed to their personalities or attendance at Staff College. Rarely for this period is the application of doctrine used as a fixed measurement used to assess performance. The presentation will take key and controversial decisions made in early 1914 and examine the underpinning doctrine and philosophies, rather than their personalities or the outcomes.
