The Battle of Nonne Bosschen, 11 November 1914

Speaker: Vern Littley
Nonne Bosschen.2

What stopped the German Army’s final great attempt to break the British line at First Ypres? Vern Littley returns to the branch to tell the fascinating story of the Battle of Nonne Bosschen, when the Prussian Guard launched a determined attack against the exhausted British defenders. Drawing on contemporary war diaries, battlefield research and his own 26 years of service with the Royal Artillery, Vern explores the men, units and guns involved and the crucial contribution of British artillery in stopping the German advance.

Vern will also take the audience onto the modern battlefield, showing how the action can still be followed around Polygon Wood, Gheluvelt and the Menin Road today. Combining military history, personal experience and a passion for battlefield exploration, Vern brings this dramatic action of November 1914 back to life.
