The German Stab in the Back Myth: Origins and perpetuation
This talk explains one of the strangest and most widespread stories about the end of the war. In 1918 the Allied armies on the Western Front drove the German Army back under conditions of near rout, leading to a mutiny in the German Navy and revolts in Berlin and other German cities. But at the same time, German generals were hatching a plan to deflect blame for defeat away from themselves, which became official German government policy after the war.
This was the "Stab in the Back Myth", that the German Army and Navy were never defeated, which became so widely repeated in Germany after the war that even some British people believed parts of it, and it still appears as fact even in a few history books.
