The WW1 Home Guard. Grandad’s Army not Dad’s Army

In 1914 rumours spread far and wide of German agents preparing to commit mayhem across the country. For those unable to enlist for full-time military service, the Volunteer Training Corps offered a chance to do something to protect homes and families. A generation before an improvised local defence force evolved into the Home Guard, so familiar from the adventures of Captain Mainwaring’s bumbling platoon of part-time soldiers, this is the story of Grandad’s Army.
